Aftercare Tips & Information

Leave the Bandage On

Your artist will wrap your tattoo after your session. Keep the bandage on for at least one hour, but no longer than overnight. If you finish late or need to travel, it’s okay to leave it on until you reach your destination to prevent the tattoo from drying out prematurely.

First Wash

Once you remove the bandage, gently wash the tattooed area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid scrubbing or using rough cloths to prevent irritation.

Remove Blood and Plasma

During the first day or two, your tattoo may bleed or release plasma. Gently clean away any fluids to prevent thick scabbing, which can lead to pigment loss or scarring.

Pat Dry

After washing, gently pat the area dry with a clean, soft towel. Never rub or scratch.

Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

Use a tattoo-specific aftercare ointment or an unscented, water-based lotion recommended by your artist. Apply a thin layer-if you use too much, blot off the excess with a clean paper towel.

Keep Your Tattoo Hydrated

Moisturize the tattoo whenever it feels dry or tight, but avoid over-moisturizing, which can suffocate the skin.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to support your body’s healing process from the inside out.

Avoid Picking or Scratching

Do not pick at scabs or scratch the tattooed area. This can cause color loss, scarring, and increase the risk of infection. Let any scabs or peeling skin fall off naturally.

Wear Loose Clothing

Choose loose, breathable clothing to minimize friction and irritation on the healing tattoo.

Sleeping with a Fresh Tattoo

If your tattoo is still bleeding the first night, avoid sleeping directly on it. To prevent sticking to sheets, wrap your tattoo with clean saran wrap after washing and drying it before bed.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks. Once healed, always use a high-SPF (30+) sunscreen to protect your tattoo from fading.

Avoid Swimming

Stay out of pools, hot tubs, and the ocean while your tattoo is healing to prevent infection and irritation.

Listen to Your Artist

Always follow your tattoo artist’s specific aftercare instructions. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask-they know what’s best for your particular design and placement.

Watch for Signs of Infection

Contact a Doctor If You Notice:

    • Persistent redness, swelling, or pain after several days
    • Fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms
    • Oozing fluids, especially if yellow, green, or foul-smelling
    • Prolonged itching, hives, or bumps

Healing Stages by Days

What to Expect:
Oozing, swelling, and redness are common and should gradually improve each day. Scabbing will start to form as your body begins the healing process.

Care Instructions:

    • Your artist will clean and bandage your tattoo before you leave the shop. Keep the wrap on for 12–24 hours, as recommended.
    • Once you remove the wrap, gently wash away any blood, plasma, or ink using fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.
    • Pat the area dry-never rub-to avoid disturbing scabs.
    • Expect soreness, warmth, and possible bruising, especially with larger tattoos. Mild flu-like symptoms can occur after long sessions.
    • Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid soaking it in water (baths, pools).

Tip: Removing excess plasma by gently washing the tattoo in the first days helps prevent large scabs.

What to Expect:
Itching and flaking begin as the scabs dry out and dead skin starts to peel. The tattoo may look dull or patchy.

Care Instructions:

    • Do not pick at scabs or peeling skin; let them fall off naturally.
    • Moisturize regularly with a fragrance-free lotion after washing and drying the tattoo.
    • If itching is intense, gently tap the area or wash it again-never scratch.
    • Skin may feel tight; moisturizing helps reduce discomfort.

Tip:  Peeling and flaking are normal, even if you see bits of colored skin come off during washing.

What to Expect:
The tattoo will appear mostly healed but might still look cloudy or shiny. Some sensitivity or minor flaking may persist.

Care Instructions:

    • Continue moisturizing as needed.
    • Avoid exposing the tattoo to the sun.
    • Inspect your tattoo for any patchy spots or fading; contact your artist for touch-ups if necessary.

Tip: Full healing of deeper skin layers can take several months, even after the surface looks normal.
